ESMA Urges Financial Firms to Complete T+1 Settlement Preparations
The European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA), the EU's financial markets regulator, has issued guidance to market participants about preparing for the shift to T+1 settlement cycles across European financial markets.
The transition is scheduled to take effect on 11 October 2027. ESMA emphasizes that 2026 represents a crucial period for firms to finalize their preparations and complete necessary system upgrades.
The regulatory body identified several key milestones for the implementation process. The first major deadline arrives on 7 December 2026, when market participants must have allocations and confirmations processes ready.
ESMA encourages all market participants to undertake comprehensive testing of their systems and verify their operational readiness. Firms are also instructed to assess the preparedness of their partners and counterparties throughout the entire trading and settlement infrastructure chain, ensuring compatibility across all segments of the financial ecosystem.
